Singapore wonderman to trek ‘desert of no return’
SINGAPORE
Tuesday, August 17, 2010

A SENIOR defence analyst in the Singapore Defence Ministry, Yap Kwong Weng, will attempt to complete the gruelling 100km trek through the Taklamakan desert in China in two days this Friday. Organised by Racing the Planet, the endeavour is to raise awareness for the United Nations Association of Singapore (Unas), a voluntary organisation established in 1969, four years after the island republic became an independent state. Unas together with other UN Associations affiliated to the World Federation of UN Associations (WFUNA) represents a peoples movement in support of the UN. !In a statement yesterday, Unas said the race would be located in the Taklamakan Desert, also known as “Taklimakan”, a desert in Central Asia in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.

Ancient travellers along the Silk Road feared the Taklamakan Desert which was known as the “place of no return” and is locally translated as “you go in and do not come out”. The Taklamakan Desert borders the Kunlun Mountains to the south and the Pamir Mountains and Tian Shan to the west and north. “It’s a personal challenge but it’s not just for me, it’s to further the cause of Unas and play a part in the UN’s millennium goals,’ said Yap who is also Unas director.
